On Judging Others July 16, 1975

God knows what weak vessels we are and thus in very few cases does He allow any one soul to suffer all temptations to an extreme degree. It is my opinion that most souls are allowed exposure to only part of the spectrum and may pass through their entire life ignorant of the trials of the parts they were not subjected to, except so far as they can subject themselves with genuine attention to another's account of his battles and of course make comparisons with their own.
We know by faith, if not by our own comprehension, that Christ knew all the temptations, and certain contemplatives are given much to endure, but as for individual men, especially those leading an active life, what can they know beyond the challenges to their temperament and talents and duties of state?
